Anne Smith Obituary

Bath - Anne Day Smith, 81, formerly of Dresden, passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at her residence.

She was born Anne Shaw Day on October 14, 1937, the daughter of Harry Lyle Day and Carrie Elizabeth (Shaw) Day in Bath.  She attended Bath schools, graduating from Morse High School in 1955 as class secretary.  She received an AA degree from Lasell College in Auburndale, MA in 1957.

Anne married 2nd Lt. Gerald Hunt Smith, U.S.M.C., on December 21, 1957.  Together they raised three sons, David, Frederick and Stephen.  The family lived in many different locales during Gerry’s nine years in the Marine Corps, and during his subsequent career in retailing, finally retiring in 1996 to an 18th Century home they restored in Dresden, and called “Bonheur”.

During the years the family moved around the country, Anne worked in various positions including NASD Registered Representative and back office manager for a small regional stock brokerage company, and in San Francisco for the Bank of America where she was chosen as one of the first three woman to be trained as a lending officer.  In the late 1970’s she began the profession she would follow for the rest of her life.  Combining an interest in writing going back to her school days and a love of miniatures, Anne began writing about the people who create and collect miniatures for several magazines devoted to the hobby, as well as other magazines and newspapers.  She traveled extensively, covering miniature shows, visiting collections, and interviewing and photographing the work of miniatures artisans.

Anne was the author of four books about miniatures, and contributed to two others.  She was a member of the National Association of Miniatures
Enthusiasts’ (NAME) Academy of Honor and served a four-year term as its Chairman.  She was also a member of the International Guild of Miniature Artisans (IGMA) and served on its Board of Trustees in the late 1990’s.  She was included in the 2007 Edition of “Who’s Who of American Women”.

Anne was predeceased by her father in 1967 and her mother in 2013.

She is survived by her husband Gerald H. Smith of Bath, three sons, David D. of Woolwich, Frederick D. and his wife Cynthia of Dracut, MA and Stephen P. and his wife Constance of Front Royal, VA, seven grandchildren, two brothers, Jonathan R. Day and his wife Linda of Wyomissing, PA and James F. Day and his wife Linda of Woolwich.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at the Chapel at Grace Episcopal Church in Bath.  Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Dresden.  Those who wish may make a memorial contribution to NAME, P.O.
