Woolwich – Louis H. Brown Sr., 92, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2024 at his residence.
He was born in Wade, Maine on April 25, 1932, a son of Clarence C. and Jennie (Skinner) Brown. He attended
Presque Isle schools and was employed on a potato farm.
At the age of 14, Louis left home and traveled on a train to Florida where he worked tirelessly until returning to Maine.
Louis held many hard jobs, one of which was working in the woods. Louis enjoyed telling the story of how he began smoking a pipe which we all know he loved.
Louis described himself as smaller than the other men he worked with in the woods, and they would always steal his cigarettes.
To thwart the men, he decided to begin smoking a pipe instead of cigarettes because they couldn't steal the pipe out of his mouth.
In 1949 he married Katherine Seigars and moved to Gardiner where he was employed on a dairy farm. After Katherine passed away, Louis moved to Woolwich and married Jane Robinson in 1959. At this time, Louis was employed in the construction industry. In 1960 he began Louis Brown Excavation which he operated until he retired in 2008.
Louis constructed his family home on Walker Road in Woolwich which was a labor of love. Utilizing his excavation equipment to dig the basement and place the large rocks for the foundation, Louis used headlights to see as he worked since he had worked all day at other excavation jobs. Louis could always be found working on something in his "shop". He loved to tinker, repair or simply relax in the large space that was such a special place for him.
Through the years, Louis was generous with his property and was happy to help family by having other residences placed on his land.
Having family so close by was dear to Louis as he could at any time see his loved ones and play an important role in their lives. Always an animal lover, Louis adored his grand childrens horses, which he would always visit in their pasture, giving them the treat of some tobacco out of his tobacco pouch. More than once, Louis nearly lost his jacket as the horses would tug at his sleeve attempting to get more tobacco from him.
Louis also taught life lessons to the younger generations in the family, giving wholesome advice from experiences he endured from a young age. If you came to Louis with a problem, he would simply answer, "well suh", before helping solve the problem. Louis was loved by not only family, but by
many friends and neighbors and was known near and far as "Brownie".
On May 26, 2007 Louis married Norma L. Holbrook of Woolwich. Louis and Norma loved to have the company of family both at their home and also at the cottage on Damariscotta Lake. Later in life, Louis continued to keep himself busy and could often be found zipping around the property on his golf cart, plowing when the snow came, and mowing on his riding mower. Louis always had something to do and always had something that needed to be done. Keeping himself busy was something Louis excelled at. But what Louis excelled at most was being a loving husband, father,
brother, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather. Louis loved his children and was so proud of everything they accomplished in life, learning through his hard work, perseverance and dedication to the most important thing to him, family. Louis' unwavering values he taught throughout his life has been passed on, generation to generation. A gift which will always live on. His legacy will shine through in the lives he touched.
Louis was predeceased by his first wife Katherine (Seigars) Brown on October 31st, 1957, by his second wife Jane (Robinson) Brown on
March 28, 1996 and Norma Holbrook-Brown on September 26th, 2021. Louis was also predeceased by three sisters, Jeannette Rose, Virginia Brand and Mildred Farrell as well as three brothers, Kenneth Brown, Richard Brown, and Clyde Brown of Presque Isle and one grandson, Cody Temple of Woolwich and Chicago.
Louis is survived by sister Irene Lannigan and her husband Bill of Alfred, brother Carl Brown and his wife Diane of Manchester, Connecticut, his two sons, Ronald E. Brown and his wife Marilyn of
Alna, Louis H. Brown Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Mapleton, one daughter, Lolita M. Bowen and her husband Basil of Woolwich,
